Apple about to buy Intel's modem division for more than $ 1.000 billion

Intel

Throughout the past year, Qualcomm and Apple have clashed in various countries, being in most cases, for issues related to the communication chips that Apple uses in its mobile devices, be it iPhone or iPad. Fortunately for both companies, they reached an agreement, but Apple is not happy.

And I say that she's not happy, not just because has had to pay almost 6.000 million dollars, but also because it does not want to continue depending exclusively on one company as a supplier of its components. To try to reduce that dependency, Apple is working on creating its own communications chip.

Tim Cook

To do this, in recent months, it has signed various Intel managers in the matter, but it seems that it is not enough and he intends to buy the modem division of Intel, a division that since the American company bought it, has maintained its headquarters in Germany. According to the Wall Street Journal, talks with Intel are well advanced and Tim Cook's company could pay just over $ 1.000 billion.

Apple's interest is not new, since it dates back to 2018, as we can read in this newspaper:

The discussions between Apple and Intel began last summer, when former Intel CEO Brian Krzanich resigned, people familiar with the matter have said. Mr. Krzanich defended the modem business and touted 5G technology as a major source of income going forward.

When Bob Swan was appointed to that position in January, analysts said the odds of a deal increased because his focus on cleaning up Intel would require addressing losses in the modem business.

What is clear, at least for the moment, is that until 2020iPhones won't have a 5G chip at the earliest.
