Apple has endowed its new smartwatch with countless improvements, but some of them are disabled by default if you are under 65 years old. Here's how to enable, for example, fall assistant to ensure your emergency contact knows when you have problems.

Fall detection Apple Watch Series 4

Apple emphasized in its latest Keynote on fall detection that the new Apple Watch Series 4 is capable of detecting, and rightly so. It is an incredibly useful feature for anyone, especially those that fall frequently, and it could save some lives.

How does fall detection work?

Fall detection is the result of years of hard work. Apple studied the tests of 2.500 participants, then used the data to create an algorithm that can identify what is a drop and what is not.

When a "major and hard drop" is detected while wearing your Apple Watch, you receive a vibration on your wrist, an alarm sounds and an alert is displayed. You can tell the Apple Watch that you fell but you're fine, or you can say that you didn't fall at all. If you do nothing, your watch will automatically call emergency services and notify your emergency contact.

Fall detection is not available on older Apple Watch models (requires a more modern and sophisticated accelerometer) and, if you are under 65 years old, it is not enabled by default on the Series 4. Fortunately, you can change that quickly.

Here are the steps you need to take to ensure fall detection is enabled:

  • Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, then tap the My Watch tab.
  • Click on Emergency SOS.
  • Press Fall detection to activate it.

It is not clear why Apple has decided to disable fall detection by default for users under the age of 65. Younger users may be less likely to fall, but it can happen and they may need help.
