How to open files with the MAFF extension on macOS

The extensions are the gateway of the files so that the applications that we have installed on our computer, recognize files and when clicking on them, they open automatically. Currently, we have at our disposal a wide variety of extensions for text documents, spreadsheets, image files, video files, compressed files ...

Still, we can always find some kind of file that we did not know until now, or we had not had the opportunity to deal with it. I'm talking about the MAFF extension, an extension created by the Mozilla Foundation (developer of Firefox) for store in a single file all the content of a website that we download.

MAFF files are standard ZIP files that contain one or more web pages, images or other content that we download through the extension available for Firefox. Additional metadata, such as the address of the original page, is saved along with the content. Unlike the related MHTML format, MAFF is compressed and is especially suitable for large media files. This type of format is ideal for share websites in a single file without resorting to attaching directories.

In order to make use of this format, Mozilla provides us with a own extension for Firefox Through which we can create this type of files. If we do not have this extension and we receive a file in this format, we can use the free MAFF Viewer application, an application that allows us to access this type of compressed format without having to decompress the file first.

If we do not want to use this application, we can choose to unzip this file to access all the stored content, an option if we want to share part of the document independently. This format is no longer supported by Mozilla, so it is likely that as the months / years go by, it will start to stop being used, although it is a shame since it offers us a versatility that we cannot find in other applications when downloading web pages.
