New rules in the Apple Store to prevent the spread of the coronavirus

The engineer

There is an offer in the Apple Store: battery change and disinfection of the iPhone for 55 Euros. I explain: On Monday I had an appointment at the Genius Bar of the Maquinista Apple Store (Barcelona) to change the battery on my father's iPhone. Oscar, the friendly technician who attended me (from here I send him a greeting), the first thing he did was spread a chamois on the table and said "put the iPhone over here, please."

He then sprayed it with alcohol and carefully wiped it with a disposable wipe before touching it. As he did so, I asked him if it was from the coronavirus and he said yes. "Nor have I shaken your hand when you have come for the same thing," he added. In other circumstances it might have bothered me, but at the moment it is understandable and almost necessary, on both sides.

Apple is introducing new measures in its physical stores to help, as much as possible, prevent the spread of the happy coronavirus. The company is going to reduce the capacity at any time in its Apple Stores. It is cutting the number of seats for its customers in half, and it is introducing social distancing protocols between people inside its establishments.

The rules vary by country and the level of proliferation of the virus

Depending on the area, depending on the proliferation of the virus, the "Today at Apple" sessions have been canceled (I can point out that in Barcelona they continue to do them, since this Monday they offered it to me). In some critical areas, stores have been temporarily closed entirely. In China, the company asked customers to wear surgical masks and undergo temperature checks before entering its stores.

The tightening of the measures depends on the geographical area of the stores, and their level of spread of the virus. Everyone is aware of the closure of stores in China during the month of January and February, and yesterday the closure of all Apple stores in Italy was announced from today, March 12.

These rules will be adapted geographically as the pandemic moves between countries. For now, I can only assure you that here in Spain, if you take your mobile in for repair, it will be delivered clean and disinfected, just like when you take the car to the dealer for repair.
