Opinion on sleep monitoring on Apple Watch

The Apple Watch 2 would be 40% slimmer and we'll see it at June's WWDC

There are several users and acquaintances who ask me if the Apple Watch monitors sleep and really to this day this is not possible directly with the watch although sources close to the company have revealed to the medium Bloomberg that the smartwatch will soon have at its disposal apps in charge of controlling our sleep patterns as well as our fitness levels, as we explained the other day in this article. The truth is that it is not clear how it can be carried out but we are sure that this is done today through third-party applications such as Sleep ++, it can be done from the watch itself natively.

Apple is clear that this is an important issue for many users and that is why it is said that soon we will be able to carry out this sleep monitoring on the Apple Watch no need to use third-party applications. But where we are going, my experience has not been entirely good with this current application to monitor sleep with the Apple Watch and I have not tried another for the moment ...

The first thing is that in order to use the watch at night and for the application to record the data, we have to change the charging habits of the device. So the first step is to adjust to charging the watch when you can. Yes, I say when you can because everyone has a different free time so charge the watch anytime you don't need it. Now with enough charge to get into bed with the watch on, we can now monitor sleep.

In the case of wanting to use this application that I used for the experiment, the first thing to do is open it on the iPhone and in the settings we have to activate the option save our data in HealthKit and be able to see them in the Health app.

Activate and stop the application manually

When we use this type of application to monitor sleep, the first thing we have to think about in the case of the Apple Watch is that it will touch us press the application at the same time we go to bed. This is not a serious problem when you get used to it, but in the beginning at least it was hard for me to remember. Be clear that the consumption of the watch in about 7 hours, in my case it oscillated between 10 and 20% of battery consumption, so giving it enough charge so that it can last during the morning without having to charge is important.

Once we got up we have to stop the application and it will offer us data related to sleep but it does not have very complete information to say. The truth is that surely there are other more complete applications but to test and measure the hours of sleep this one helped me.

Conclusions

A good rest is not achieved thanks to the clockThat is clear to me, but if it helps to obtain important data from it and improve it with applications of this type. Obviously it cannot be said that the mattress and pillow that we use, how tired we get home and the hours we have to sleep if we go to bed earlier, are the key to rest to the maximum and face the day with maximum energy. In any case, this application used in my watch can be used for it, but personally I think that this watch today is not the right one for this task, it can be useful, but it is not the best in this sense.

In the App Store we have a good handful of applications available that help us to measure sleep with the Apple Watch, but in my case I have only used this application for this task since I found it simple and easy to use. The sleep measurement is not something that worries me too much in general either as I usually sleep well and it is not difficult for me to get up. You can see different applications in the store and if you have any to share that you find interesting to leave it in comments, it is always better to have several alternatives.
