In recent years, we have seen how macOS has not included many new features that especially highlight the attention, although it must be recognized that they are very practical such as being able to unlock access to the Mac from the Apple Watch or use the iPad screen as the secondary screen of the Mac.
This last function, which is proposed as acompletely free alternative to Luna Display, it does not work on all computers, something that is usually common with the new functions that Apple adds to macOS, so if you have doubts about whether your Mac will be compatible with Sidecar, then we clarify them.
Macs are characterized by lasting many years without any problem, which contributes to Apple continuing to release updates compatible with older computers. macOS Catalina is compatible with the same equipment as macOS Mojave, that is all Macs that hit the market after 2012.
One way to force users to renew their equipment, if they want to enjoy some of the new functions is through limit their operation on more modern equipmentAs is the case with Sidecar, this feature is only supported on the following Mac models:
- 27-inch iMac from 2015 onwards.
- MacBook Pro 2016 onwards
- Mac Mini from 2018 onwards
- MacPro 2019 onwards
- MacBook Air from 2018 onwards
- MacBook 2016 onwards
- iMac Pro from 2017 onwards
We do not know what Apple will use to limit the use of this new function, but it is especially striking that Mac Pro 2013 does not support this feature when you have power to spare.
Thanks to this new function and the Apple Pencil, we can turn our iPad into a digitizing tablet to use, if we like the design or use it as a second screen to view content from other applications.
