Slack gets its own dark mode for macOS

Slack in Dark Mode

Better late than never. The application that most users use for teamwork, Slack, receives the famous dark mode. Many apps have allowed dark mode for more than 12 months. Also, Apple incorporated it into its operating system just a year ago, with the release of macOS Mojave.

As of now, the Slack desktop apps, including the macOS app, get the expected dark mode. The developers have been slow with this implementation, but the wait has been worth it, because the transformation leaves a dark mode that allows to work perfectly and is applied throughout the interface.

Therefore, main interface receives dark mode, but so does the sidebar. In the words of George Zamfir of Slack, this new feature brings all of this:

Dark mode is an important feature for many people. It is useful for working at night or in low light, and we know that many need it for accessibility reasons such as visual impairments, migraines or other visual disturbances.

Sidebar Dark Mode

On an aesthetic level we have nothing to reproach the company for. In contrast, the new dark themes in the Slack desktop app don't honor dark mode settings throughout the macOS system. That is, the correct operation should be for Slack to sync with the current mode of macOS: if it is in day mode, the application chooses a light theme, and it chooses the dark mode if this mode is selected in macOS. In this integration, the company recognizes that it is working and will arrive soon.

On the other hand, using the dark mode, as it is configured at the moment, is not an easy task. The first thing we have to do is update the application so that we have the latest version available. The path to change themes is Slack Preferences - Sidebar - Theme. After that, the dark mode is selected to enjoy the latest creation of the application.
