What's new in watchOS 9

Watch 9

A few hours ago the presentation keynote for the week of the WWDC 2022, and how could it be otherwise watchOS 9 has also been presented, with some interesting news.

The ninth edition of the software Apple Watch It has been presented at this afternoon's event with some new features, such as the new spheres, improvements in the training app, atrial fibrillation history, improvements in the sleep application, and a few other things.

All Apple device software is going to have a new version this year, and the company takes advantage of the WWDC week to present them, and launch the first betas so that developers can start testing them. Watch 9, has also been introduced. Let's see what they explained at this afternoon's virtual event.

New Customizable Watch Faces

Apple introduced us to four new watch faces a while ago: Lunar, Playtime, Metropolitan y Astronomy, which will be included in watchOS 9. Also classic watch faces like Utility, Simple and Activity Analog will be updated with new features. The new watchOS will also bring a new Portrait watchface that shows the depth effect in more photos. And the watch faces will also have interaction with the Focus modes on the iPhone. Users will be able to select watch faces that correspond to the different profiles of said application that we have on the iPhone.

Training App Improvements

This new update also improves the app I train with richer training metrics and experiences to help users achieve fitness goals. For example, the session display now uses the Digital Crown to allow users to rotate between easier-to-read training views.

Apple watchOS 9 will also allow users to create custom workouts. This structured training can include work and rest intervals. Users will also be able to add new alerts such as fully customizable pace, power, heart rate and cadence.

For triathletes, the Training app now supports a new kind of multisport training. This allows users to switch between any sequence of swim, bike and run workouts. The app uses motion sensors to recognize movement patterns. When a user finishes a workout, the app will display a redesigned summary page in the Fitness app.

Additionally, watchOS 9 offers new features for runners, including more data to track stroke efficiency. These include new running form metrics such as gait length, ground contact time, and vertical oscillation. All of these metrics will be displayed in the Fitness app summary as well as in the Health app so that the user's running form can be corrected.

With watchOS 9 new spheres will arrive

The Fitness app comes to the iPhone

For users of Fitness +, watchOS 9 now displays on-screen guidance in addition to coaching from trainers. This will help users get the most out of workouts, including Intensity for HIIT, Cycling, Rowing, and Treadmill; Stroke per Minute (SPM) for Rowing; Revolutions Per Minute (RPM) for Cycling; and Incline for walkers and runners on treadmill.

The Apple Fitness app can now be accessed even without an Apple Watch. The app will be available as part of the new features of iOS 16 on the iPhone. A novelty for those who do not have an Apple Watch.

History of atrial fibrillation

watchOS 9 will allow Apple Watch users to activate the FDA-approved Atrial Fibrillation History feature and access important user health information. Such data includes an estimate of how often a user's heart rate shows signs of atrial fibrillation (IBF).

Users will also be able to receive weekly notifications to help understand frequency and view a detailed history in the Health app. This will include various lifestyle factors that affect atrial fibrillation, such as sleep, alcohol consumption, and how much exercise you do during the week.

Another important novelty is that you can download PDF files of atrial fibrillation history and lifestyle factors so they can be sent to your doctor.

An app for medicines

With watchOS 9 we will also have a new application called Pharmaceutical products to keep track of medications, vitamins and dietary supplements that the user takes on a regular basis. The app allows you to create a medication list, set schedules and reminders, and view all the information in the Health app.

The Reminders app and the Calendar app also get some minor updates. and the app cardio-recovery now provides cardiac recovery estimates after a walk, run, or hike workout.

Compatibility

Apple will release the final version of watchOS 9 to all users this fall as a free update for Apple Watch owners. It will be available for Apple Watch Series 4 and later models. This means that the company is dropping support for the Apple Watch Series 3 and earlier.
